Local Area

Welcome to the Monadnock Region

High Mowing is located on a hilltop in the small town of Wilton, in the Monadnock region of southern New Hampshire, 60 miles northwest of Boston. The region is known for its gently rolling wooded hills and old country roads. Within minutes of High Mowing you can meander on trails through old-growth woods and hike up small mountains. In the winter, cross-country ski trails are outside your door, and downhill slopes are a short drive away.

The High Mowing campus is surrounded by opportunities for daily connections. Pine Hill Waldorf School, located across the street, serves nursery through grade 8 and High Mowing students interact with these younger students through internships or other joint activities. The Hilltop Café, a natural bakery and café, is located 5 minutes down the road on the Temple-Wilton Community Farm. Students can walk to the café where they might purchase a smoothie made with milk from the cows they just passed, or order an omelet made from farm-fresh eggs and vegetables.
“HMS is wonderful when it comes to considering what the students want to do. For example, if a student suggests that we should go to Boston or arrange a ski trip for a weekend, the dorm counselors will gladly plan a trip! All you have to do is ask.”

Wilton

Wilton was established 250 years ago, and grew around its many small mills along the Souhegan Riverin the 19th century. Today downtown Wilton is host to a variety of stores, shops, and restaurants. A once-empty furniture factory is now filled to capacity with working artist studios, small galleries, and shops dedicated to the unique and artful. Main Street is home to the historic Wilton Town Hall Theatre. Located upstairs in the 1886 Town Hall building, it became a movie house in 1912.  For the last thirty years Dennis, the owner, has offered fresh popcorn, real butter, and good movies the way they used to be shown.

The Surrounding Area

Nashua, New Hampshire, 20 miles to the east, is the closest city to High Mowing, with all the amenities of a metropolitan area, including expansive shopping malls, upscale restaurants, and cultural institutions. Fifteen miles to the west is the town of Peterborough, famous as the home of the MacDowell Colony, the oldest art colony in the US. But it is also home to great shops, dining, and bookstores. The seacoast and many sandy beaches are an hour’s drive to the east. The White Mountains and the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire, famous venues for hiking, camping, and skiing, are two hours to the north.

If you are longing for the city life, Boston is only an hour and half drive away. As one of America's premier cities — with a very large population of students — Boston is an endless source of delight. Regular outings are organized to visit Boston and Cambridge. Each year a bus trip heads off to New York City to spend the day exploring and the evening at the Metropolitan Opera.
I was always able find something fun to do at HMS, whether it was watching a movie with friends, going out for ice cream, playing games such as pool or cards, going down to the soccer fields and passing a ball around, going for walks around campus, or just hanging out and jamming on the oval.”
