Weekends ... Plenty to Do!

Weekends at High Mowing are as varied as our students. They range from highly organized — busy with events involving all of the boarding and day students — to spans of quiet time which allow for study, rest and relaxation. On weekends when school-wide events are not planned, group trips or activities are often organized by the Student Life Action Committee (SLAC). These might include an outing to the local movie theater, stage show in Boston, or other day trips to destinations in Cambridge, Boston or Portsmouth.
HMS is wonderful when it comes to considering what the students want to do. For example, if a student suggests that we should go to Boston or arrange a ski trip for a weekend, the dorm counselors will gladly plan a trip!
All you have to do is ask.

There is a regular rhythm to the year that shapes weekend events. Depending on the season, students are often participating or attending a game of one of the school’s sports teams. In the fall there are soccer matches, while in the winter there are basketball games. It’s back outdoors in the spring for the women’s lacrosse matches or the men’s baseball games.

During Parents Weekend in October, when families visit the campus, the students are busy performing in music or dramatic productions, and helping out in many other ways. The “big room” is transformed into an exotic locale three times a year when all-school dances are organized and hosted by different classes. Coffee House is a long-standing Saturday night tradition at High Mowing. Completely student-run, it is an event that happens five times each year. The evening includes a range of student performances such as skits, music, poetry, dance, and circus arts.

A non-denominational Chapel service occurs once a month, featuring speakers on a wide range of topics. These evenings begin with a dress-up supper attended by faculty and students prior to attending Chapel. Each weekend is wrapped up with a dormitory meeting between the residents and dorm counselors, a community house-cleaning session and study hall.
