Commencement Address 2014

Mary Graham, President of the High Mowing Board of Trustees and alumnae parent, gave this year's Commencement Address. Mary, a career artist, encouraged the graduates to cultivate their artistic senses, and to "be awake, and pay attention."

Read the full speech below.

"Thank you, faculty, alumni, trustees, parents, families, friends, and, especially, graduates…

Two months ago, when Cary Hughes called me into his office, and shut the door behind me, I knew I was in trouble…

Today, I am honored and grateful to be given the opportunity to speak to you. But when I was asked to…

Interview with Dale Coye

Join us this weekend for our Spring Musical, Finian's Rainbow. Performances are May 1, 2, and 3 at 7pm at the Pine Hill Waldorf School. Tickets sold at the door, $12 for adults and $8 for students. As the cast prepares for the first performance on Thursday, director Dale Coye sat down with us to talk about producing and directing a musical.

Sorrell’s siblings inspired her because she was intrigued by the many possibilities in circus arts. Sorrell continued to follow this passion, learning to juggle, unicycle, balance on rolling globes and tightwire throughout her studies at the Pine Hill. After years…

February Model UN Conference

High Mowing students were joined by peers from Alvirne High School and Monadnock Waldorf School to debate one of the more difficult geopolitical issues of the 21st century: China’s Claims in the South China Sea and the islands in dispute between China and Japan.

This conference was a gathering of the UN Security Council, one of the UN’s six principal bodies. The Security Council is tasked with maintaining international peace and security. To prepare for such a complicated topic, the students start researching weeks…

Chanukah Happenings

Students enjoy latkes and play the dreidel game in the dormsby Liva Jostad-Laswell

As part of this year’s holiday festivities at High Mowing we have been observing Chanukah, the Jewish festival of lights. This year, Chanukah began the night before Thanksgiving—the first Chanukah-Thanksgiving overlap in nearly 100 years, and the last we will see for about another 70 years. Luckily, Chanukah’s timing still offered us four nights for celebration here at HMS.

On Wednesday evening, the eighth and last night of Chanukah, Judy Wachler and I cooked up about 75 latkes and hosted a large group of both boarding and day students in my home. The latkes, a potato …
