Christmas Books

Each year the Christmas Book is presented to the school during the Yule Festival. Every student designs a page and members of the senior class design and construct a case. Though the books vary in style, each is unique and beautiful.

Michaelmas: A Celebration of Courage

High Mowing Students celebrate Michaelmas by wearing red, the color of strength

While food, clothing and shelter are essential for physical survival, the human spirit also has fundamental requirements. We feel a  deep need for connection and we feel a sense of joy and warmth when we experience ourselves as linked to something bigger. We need connection to other humans and animals, connection to the natural world around us, and a connection to deeper meaning and purpose in our lives. The traditions and rituals of seasonal festivals serve to strengthen and deepen these ties and create a sense of being “at home” in our community and in the cosmos.

The Importance of Parents Weekend

display of seasonal items during Parents Weekend in OctoberMy daughter, Allison, graduated this past June and I enjoyed attending Parents Weekend for all four of the years she was at High Mowing. Why did I make a point of coming all four years? As a parent of a boarding student and being from California, the first and foremost reason was to see her and give her a big hug!

Being from the other coast, I didn’t get to see her much during the school year, so Parents Weekend was a great time to do so. And given that she was on the soccer team, it was the one chance each season to see her play.

A Look Back on the Year

It has been a whirlwind of activity on Abbot Hill for the last few weeks! There were celebratory graduation events and activities, followed by an intense week of professional development for teaching and administrative staff, topped off by our much-anticipated High Mowing Alumni/ae Weekend. Now, with the broad expanse of summer before us, I have a moment to reflect on all of these activities and the accomplishments of the year.
