Student-Led Laughter and Sharing
Coffeehouse is a long-standing Saturday night tradition at High Mowing. Completely student-run, it is an event that happens five times each year, drawing the entire school community out for a night of laughter and of sharing. Each year, five seniors take on the role of Master of Ceremonies. At the end of the school year, the MCs pass the baton by choosing their successors for the coming year.
“I think the most fun I had at High Mowing was performing at and being MC for the coffee house every six weeks. It was mad fun, and actually quite the life-changing experience.”

The MCs usually start the evening by performing a skit that presents the theme for the evening. The floor is then open to any High Mowing student who wishes to perform. Performances include student-created music, poetry, jokes, or films. Occasional alumni guests round out the evening, which is likely to run for several hours. A “Special Blend” Coffeehouse is held in the spring, to which parents and prospective families are invited. On this night, parents are also offered the opportunity to perform.
“Having an entire school — students and teachers (and even parents, sometimes) — laugh together is in part what makes the community so tightly-knit. Feeling comfortable around peers and teachers brings out parts of you you never knew existed.”
