HMS receives Land Ethic for Tomorrow (LEFT) Award
Posted 02/24/2014 01:50PM

High Mowing School receives LEFT awardHigh Mowing School recently received the Land Ethic for Tomorrow (LEFT) Award from the New Hampshire Land Surveyors Association (NHLSA) at its 2013 annual meeting.

The LEFT Award recognizes an individual, company, or government agency that has made unique and significant land-use decisions based upon accurate and complete land information gathered and used in an advanced and innovative manner.

“High Mowing School’s substantial progress towards the conservation of 160+/- acres of prime forest and farmland, in partnership with abutting landowners, demonstrates their commitment to long range land stewardship and the ecological protection of valuable Souhegan River frontage,” said Ken Clinton of Meridian Land Services, LLC. “We commend the school for their efforts and congratulate them as the recipient of our ‘Land Ethics for Tomorrow’ award.”

During the past 30 years HMS has relied on intensive soil surveys, precise boundary surveying and mapping on the campus, including aerial mapping of topography, and soil sampling to support site planning and environmental design as the facility has expanded to meet its needs. In 2012 HMS developed an application to the Farm and Ranch Land Protection Program (FRPP) that will result in a Conservation Easement on about 160 acres of forest and field land on and adjacent to the campus.

For 70 years HMS has utilized those forests and fields as outdoor classrooms in order to impress upon students the importance of a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature. HMS students graduate with the ability to make land use decisions that are based upon sound ecological principles and a heritage of land stewardship.
