Executive Director's Welcome

Here at High Mowing School, we are off the beaten path — but not too far — situated just over an hour from Boston on 250 acres of farm and forest land. Our beautiful campus — originally a home that became a school, but remained a home nonetheless — serves as an interactive classroom where students explore everything from ethics to ecology, and studio and performing art to circus and culinary arts.

We are a tight-knit learning and living community with a unique student culture…one of tolerance and acceptance, which is demanded of and maintained by the students themselves. Ask any one of our students about this and you will learn about the heart and spirit of High Mowing.  This is a safe place for adolescents to be themselves.

We also offer the original 21st century education, with a Four-Year Core Curriculum designed to mirror and reflect the development of the soul life of the adolescent and focus on nurturing soul capacities as our young people grow through the phases of young adulthood.

In addition to the Four-Year Core program, our Signature Programs focus on activity which is uniquely human: understanding the interaction between human beings and nature in the forests and wilderness in our Naturalist Program; witnessing and participating in the transformation of the natural world in the fields and gardens in our Horticulture Program; and growing as creative and performing artists, and craftsmen and craftswomen, in our studios, on our stages, and in our kitchen.

At High Mowing we offer an arts-infused, arts-rich curriculum, immersed in and surrounded by nature, which enables our students to find their passions and gives them the tools they need to take them into the world — to college and beyond. Our graduates are confident, creative individuals pursuing their passions and making the world a better place.

I am delighted that you are visiting the High Mowing website. As useful as you might find this website, however, nothing can equal a visit to our campus. Come meet the people who compose this community of learners. Talk to our engaged and excited students. Sit in on an imaginative and spirited class lesson.

You will see, reflected in the young people, the development of social skills, social sensitivity, and social understanding, which the curriculum at High Mowing School strives to bring out in the students. Underlying all aspects of learning at High Mowing School is the conviction that each student has a unique sense of self and of her or his own life’s purpose.
