"Living the Question"

Teaching in a small, diverse community, one has to be comfortable with the unexpected and the (seemingly) unsolvable. I’m challenged personally and professionally to stretch and engage and grow as an act of faith; to be patient toward what is as yet unanswerable.  While it’s a pleasure to refine my art and delve deeper into my interests, working with adolescents requires that I stay fresh and flexible, to explore and collaborate, to imagine and share the dreams of others.

Nothing I do is ‘extra-curricular.’ I have a personal immersive learning curriculum that begins but doesn’t end with a multi-medium art practice. I’m also interested in alternative building, permaculture, homesteading, small business management, animal husbandry, canning and preserving, handmade soap making, cheese making, baking, beading, knitting, spinning and weaving.  I am currently working to perfect my skill at fire breathing (no kidding!).

One of the things I appreciate most about the learning environment at High Mowing is the opportunity for deep engagement with things. A student’s request for extra studio time can easily turn into a session of intense focus in which we are able, in one afternoon and evening or a weekend, to move her through a project to the next level of skill and knowledge. To be able to choose this way of living and working is rare and essential.
