FAQ: Philanthropy at High Mowing School

The simple answer is that tuition does not cover the expenses of this transformative education. The expenses of running a 300-acre, 20-building school, hiring and retaining our committed faculty and staff, as well as the school’s generous tuition aid cannot be met with tuition alone.

We are proud of our Community Fund for High Mowing, formerly referred to as the Annual Fund.  Why the Community Fund? In short, it takes a committed community to support our students and to sustain our educational endeavors on Abbot Hill. As tuition does not cover the full cost of a High Mowing School education, we must raise funds above and beyond tuition revenues  with support from all whose lives have been touched by our school: alumni, alumni parents, current parents, former faculty and staff, current faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends. In 2024-25, we must raise $900,000 in unrestricted gifts.

The three most common categories of gifts are unrestricted, restricted, and in-kind.

• Unrestricted gifts to the Community Fund are vital for HMS to bridge the gap between tuition revenues and the cost of an HMS education, thereby ensuring a balanced budget each year.
• Restricted gifts are designated by the donor to a specific area such as endowed scholarship funds and capital projects for the upkeep of our campus facilities.
• In-kind gifts are contributions of goods or services rather than cash.

There are many ways to make a charitable gift to High Mowing.

• Online giving is available on our website.
• Donors can also send checks directly to the HMS Advancement Office at 222 Isaac Frye Hwy, WIlton, NH 03086.
• Gifts of appreciated stocks and cryptocurrency are welcome options as well.

Like most independent schools, High Mowing School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Please consult with your tax advisor on how best to make your gift work for you and HMS.

Because High Mowing is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, most companies that offer matching opportunities will match your contribution. If you have questions about matching gifts, please contact your company and the Advancement Team.

Planned giving is a wonderful way to ensure that High Mowing School is able to extend its mission to future generations of students. The Abbot Hill Society was started to encourage and recognize donors who wish to support the school through bequests and other planned giving vehicles. We are deeply grateful for our Abbot Hill Society members and encourage those who have yet to include HMS in their estate plans to consider doing so.
