A Living Classroom

High Mowing's 300 acre is a boundless classroom unto itself. Spanning from the top of Abbot Hill down to the Souhegan River, High Mowing's land is full of academic opportunity and artisitc inspiration—and there's always somewhere quiet for reflection.

Our Naturalist and Horticulture programs are the most visible example of High Mowing's philsophopy of teaching with the earth and in a natural environment, but our beautiful campus is the underpinning of many of our courses and programs. Our campus provides inspiration for art classes, examples for science classes, and proper space for movement and athletics.

From Geology to biology our students learn through observation of their outdoor surroundings. The sophomores study hydrology down at the Souhegan River, and learn surveying and trigonometry my mapping the surrounding terrain. In culinary arts the students cut and cook vegetables from the school's gardens. Scraps from meals are composted, and students use that compost to renew the topsoil of the gardens. During their Transcendentalists block the seniors take to the land, like Thoreau and Emerson, to tackle questions of philosophy and spirituality.

Founded in 1942, High Mowing School is an accredited Waldorf co-educational school serving day, boarding, and homestay students in Wilton, NH, from early childhood through grade 12. HMS is a place to grow intellectually, artistically, and socially while living and learning with students from across town and around the world.  Accredited by NEASC and AWSNA (high school current; lower school in process).
