Our teachers use real-world data and integrative approaches to teach the students to solve the problems in front of them, while also building a deeper understanding of the underlying concepts.

During 9th and 10th grade a foundation of mathematical knowledge is built. Algebra and Geometry are the focus during these first two years, and classes are held before lunch so that the students are awake, alert, and creative while critical skills are developed. Without ever picking up a textbook, our students study linear algebra, polynomials, scientific notation, functions, the quadratic equation, basic trigonometry, and more.

In block the students are also introduced to several specific fields of mathematics. The first-years study probability, and the underlying mathematics, in the Combinations and Permutations block. The sophomores end their year with the Surveying and Trigonometry block, in which they calculate the area and elevations of High Mowing’s hilltop campus. And the juniors—with a body of knowledge in “finite,” Euclidian geometry at their disposal—explore planes, dimensions, and the concept of infinity in the Projective Geometry block.
Upperclassmen can continue their mathematics education in the Precalculus course, which introduces the students to the abstract concepts that form the foundation of calculus. Students in Calculus study integral and differential calculus, and come to understand both the discipline’s historical roots and its relevance to modern life.
