Help If You Need It

High Mowing is designed for the academic success of all students. The curriculum and Waldorf approach are designed to meet the needs of students with a variety of learning styles. Small classes and close working relationships between teachers and students assure that all students get the attention they need. In addition, all students meet weekly with their Faculty Advisors so that any concerns or difficulties can be addressed in a timely way.

Should a student need additional educational support, High Mowing provides individualized tutoring services tailored to the student’s needs. The tutor helps the student to actively engage with the curriculum and approach the learning process in an organized and systematic fashion.

Strategies that can be employed include help to
  • facilitate active listening skills
  • develop effective note-taking skills
  • plan a purposeful study
  • develop a systematic approach to reading
  • learn to plan, organize, write, and revise a writing assignment
Tutors may also work with students to help them
  • overcome test anxiety
  • improve their memory
  • learn effective time management
With time, attention, and practice, students can internalize these experiences, developing study skills and habits of mind that will ultimately enable them to independently fulfill their potential.

The Educational Support Committee (ESC) of the Faculty is responsible for developing and overseeing individual academic support. The ESC meets weekly and works closely with the tutors. The committee, when appropriate, develops an Educational Support Plan, which is similar to and encompasses any Independent Education Plan (IEP). Any costs associated with individual support are the responsibility of the student’s parents.

The ESC also facilitates counseling services and the Health, Education, Leadership and Prevention (HELP) program. This program is designed to contribute to a drug-free and alcohol-free campus by providing an environment in which prevention and support play a primary role.
