High Mowing School (HMS) is honored to announce Cary Hughes as our 2025 commencement speaker.
For 45 years, Cary Hughes has been a cornerstone of the High Mowing School community – as a teacher, advisor, trustee, and steadfast steward of the culture and traditions on the Hill. Earlier this year, Cary announced his retirement, and we are honored that he has agreed to address the Class of 2025 at the commencement ceremony.
“As I reflect on Cary’s impact, an image comes to mind of the Symbols Lyceum, which is held each year during the holidays,” reflects Allison Pelletier, Dean of Students. “At that event, Cary presents the symbols of the alpha and the omega—the beginning and the end. Cary’s retirement marks the end of an era for High Mowing School, and it is fitting that he delivers our commencement address as our seniors transition to their new beginnings.”
“I am deeply grateful to Cary Hughes for all he has contributed to High Mowing School,” says Head of School Katherine C. Meyer, class of 1990. “When this class began high school, Cary welcomed them as Dean of Students. We say in our mission that we educate students to fulfill their highest potential and lead lives of meaningful purpose. Cary’s life and legacy embody that commitment—both to the 32 graduating seniors and to the many students he has guided over the decades.”
HMS celebrates the Class of 2025 at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 7 on the high school campus. The commencement ceremony is open to the community and a video will be available on our website afterward.
