HMS Black Rock Soccer Program Featured in Renewal Magazine
While for younger Waldorf students, participation in extracurricular sports isn’t a norm — with free play emphasized instead — once students reach high school, dedication to a sport can be important. "In the Upper School, it is necessary to make provision for more movement… [where] students with specific abilities can develop their full potential, which is not always possible in whole class situations," editors Kevin Avison and Martyn Rawson write in "The Tasks and Content of the Steiner-Waldorf Curriculum."
HMS brainstormed how to meet this need while also appealing to a wider audience. As a result, in 2019, HMS connected with the Black Rock Football Club to form one of Black Rock's four US-based residential academies, bringing high-level soccer players from across the world to HMS to train for collegiate or professional play.
The resulting program — and the benefits it has brought — were the focus of an article published in the Spring 2024 issue of School Renewal magazine.
"The work that Scott [Miller, High Mowing's athletic director, director of Black Rock FC Residential Academies, and BRFC boys head coach] has done with Black Rock exemplifies the best of what a Waldorf education is," Head of School Katherine C. Meyer says in the article. "The program bolsters the school community to be open to and curious about others, and students are supported to grow into adulthood in meaningful ways — exactly what we want from an HMS and a Waldorf education."
Published by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, School Renewal "features sought after articles on 'hot topic' themes, book reviews, member highlights, and interviews with alums — modern design elements and highly relevant content for Waldorf school parents and others that are interested in learning more about Waldorf education."
