Earth Day Campus Clean-Up

Students and faculty spent the morning last Tuesday cleaning up the campus in honor of Earth Day. The day’s work was organized by students in Keith Badger’s Environmental Issues class.

The Environmental Issues class identifies and studies questions of how human culture, and individuals within that culture, relate to the environment. The discussions held in the class created an impulse among the students to act. The students decided to initiate and organize an event to commemorate Earth Day, an annual day of events and demonstrations advocating environmental protection.

At an all-school assembly on the morning of Earth Day, the students from the Environmental Issues class showed a short movie, led the school in some songs, and read a few short written pieces. Students and faculty then broke into groups and cleaned up the campus for most of the morning. They prepared the campus by raking, spreading mulch, trimmed back underbrush, cleaning the pool, and more. The morning ended with a game of capture the flag to bring the community together.
Keith expects similar commemorations of Earth Day to continue under the leadership of members of the Environmental Issues class.
