Mrs. Karl doesn’t think of Pottery as a course. She sees it as an apprenticeship, a time to learn every aspect of an age-old craft.
“The ‘Pottery’ has long been and still is a source of character building alongside its busy, truly creative output.”
~Mrs. Emmet, From Farm to School
Many modern studios work with pre-bagged clay, but students in Mrs. Karl’s class begin their time in the Pottery by weighing and mixing clays bought directly from mines. Only after preparing the clay that they themselves will use do they learn proper wedging (kneading) technique and begin to make pots. They help Mrs. Karl in the Kiln, and as they gain experience they are introduced to the wheel and learn glazing techniques.
