High Mowing School’s material art program includes a fully stocked materials studio for exploring the practical artistic mediums of metal, wood, jewelry-making, stained glass (copper foil technique), clay sculpture (both figurative and abstract clay modeling), and bookbinding.
In the Materials Studio, the students make beautiful, practical objects out of a wide variety of materials using specialized hand tools, concentrating on exactness in the use of those tools and developing endurance and skillfulness of hand, as well as observational skills and an understanding of the elements of three-dimensional design. Designs will often arise from the students’ own intuitive sense of the medium and/or drawings that they create themselves, building on an understanding of the properties of the particular medium, and the skills required to work with it. This helps to train the art students’ senses and their will, as well as enhance their understanding of Geometry, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and other subjects they are studying in their academic and practical coursework.
